Update: 26th July 2011
The chronology now makes it possible to compare SFF related activity in Slovenia and across the world. The emphasis is, of course, on the first, but important international milestones are listed for orientation. Organisational activity is separated from SFF literary edition by colour. Details on Slovenian artistic and analytic content can be found on other pages of The Guide. Much is still missing, so overlooked important information and corrections are welcome; write to vodnik.zf (at) gmail.com.

The competition is organised by Sekcija za spekulativno umetnost, Društvo ljubiteljev Nova and Tehniška založba Slovenije. The schedule of the biggest Yugoslav SF event so far includes 18 films, an extra 35 hours of SF on two video systems, two theatrical pieces, two concerts, an exhibition of paintings, photography and books, a literary evening, lectures, discussions, computer and board games. In Sirius, Darije Dokić mentions some confusion regarding the division of the three organisers' responsibilities, giving preference to Fantazija over Eurocom, modest numbers of visitors from abroad due to weak promotion, unreadiness for the numerous local guests (1200 instead of the anticipated 500), and the prohibition of several film projections due to lack of agreement with the distributor. | 21–23 September 1984: »Orwellovo leto 1984«: II. mednarodni festival znanstvene fantastike (Orwell's year 1984: II. international science fiction festival) takes place in Cankarjev dom, alongside the sixth YUkon. The programme includes film projections, presentations, concerts, a theatrical and ballet performance, radio plays and multimedia content. The announced guests are Bob Shaw, Boris Grabnar and Društvo slovenskih pesnikov in pisateljev. Darije Dokić notes in Sirius that part of the diverse programme was not related to SF and that many films were too avant-garde or of inferior quality. The guest of honour, Ian Watson. left a great impression. The low numbers of foreign visitors are, in his opinion, due to projections of films already shown abroad several years earlier. This festival also generates some grudges among the clubs. 1984: Društvo ljubiteljev ZF Nova publishes the last, seventh issue of the fanzine Nova. 1984: Literature: Igra in agonija (Bojan Meserko). |
1984: Sirius is again declared to be the best European SF magazine. 21–23 February 1986: in Zagreb, SFeraKon 86' and YUkon take place simultaneously. As Hrvoje Prćić writes in Sirius, Sam Lundwall, the guest of honour, unfortunately cancelled attendence. Some competitions and serious content were also missed, but were compensated by the participants' enthusiasm in the unofficial part. He also praises the excellent video programme, both exhibitions and the amateur theatre show. Among the nominated stories for the SFERA award are Opna and Govoreči stebri by our Miha Remec, as well as his Mana in the novel category. Despite their slowed down activity, representatives of the Ljubljana clubs attend the convention. 1986: Eurocon (Zagreb, Yugoslavia). |

Butler). |
| 27–30 September 1988: in Cankarjev dom, the festival Fantastika 88 – pregled znanstvenofantastičnih in fantastičnih filmov (a review of SFF films) takes place. According to different estimates, around 100 or 400 people view the films on average. Miha Granda, president of DLZF Nova, awards Nova diplomas for contributions to (above all, Slovenian) SF: to Miha Remec for his writing, to Žiga Leskovšek and Drago Bajt for criticism and theory, as well as the magazines Superpip and Življenje in tehnika (Iskra and Samo Kuščer are among previous winners). Some find the film selection features too much comical and young adult content and also resent the fact that the organisers did not invite other Yugoslav clubs this time (supposedly due to the festival happening mid-week and the upcoming Skopje convention). 1988: Miha Granda publishes the shapirographed fanzine NOVI-ce, which invites new members to Nova. 1988: Literature: Terra almanah: izbor sodobne domače in tuje znanstveno fantastične proze (ed. Leskovšek). |
October 1988: Sirius publishes texts by four Slovenians. Žiga Leskovšek (SF magle u Sloveniji) scolds the publishers for republishing old translations, translations through several languages, or just poor translations instead of fresh quality literature, all of which causes the SF scene to regress. He finds it immature that the complacent Slovenian clubs are unready to cooperate and that they withhold information, which are, in his opinion, the reasons for brain drain. Miha Granda (Što se dogodilo sa slovenskim SF klubovima) also reproaches the clubs for resting on their laurels, but mentions lack of funds, which also troubles his Nova, as an excusable reason. He acknowledges the lack of dialogue in coorganising the festivals in 1983 and 1984, after which several members left due to disputes (Žiga Leskovšek, Miha Remec and others) – the membership fell from 100 to 20 and the remaining members have been meeting only infrequently. Still, he is optimistic regarding the organisation of YUkon 88'. Miha Remec (Sjaj i bijeda znanstvene fantastike u Sloveniji) writes about the mistaken conception of the self-satisfied Slovenian clubs on the Anglo-Saxon model, since they do not operate as commercial or creative associations. He mentions the small number of fans, the disappointing organisation and the disregard for Slovenian authors at Fantazija 83' and Orwellovo leto 1984. Due to the general underestimation of Slovenian literature he does not find it surprising that serious authors like to distance themselves from the club scene and make their way into mainstream. Samo Kuščer (Mogu li SF klubovi postojati bez svoje misije?), on the contrary, writes about the important social role the clubs play. He also mentions the relationship between science and art in SF, which bestows on it a mission of enlightenment, education and critical judgement. He then derives an interesting comparison of the SF scene and religious missionary work. Hrvoje Prćić declares Terra almanah to be the best Yugoslav edition this year. November 1988: after his visit to Ljubljana, Prćić in Sirius commends Terra on its activities and writes about the potential reactivation of Nova. He also reminds of the rich tradition of Slovenian SF, which has produced the first Yugoslav SF clubs, fanzines and critics. December 1988: in Granda's opinion, the rift between authors and amateurs was not caused by just a handful of individuals, of which he is said to be one. The clubs have difficulty operating without a permanent residence and resources, so they are often registered at private addresses. He suggests they should model themselves after foreign clubs, Nova connecting fans, and Terra connecting professionals. Several critical responses and general polemics by Slovenians follow his first text. 1988: Eurocon (Budapest, Hungary). 1988: Film: Akira (Katsuhiro Otomo).
