THE BIG SITES

The Ultimate Science Fiction Web Guide

SF Site: The Home Page for Science Fiction and Fantasy
SF Site nudi recenzije, intervjuje, odlomke iz del in pregleden katalog ZF povezav.

SF Crowsnest

Indian Science Fiction and Fantasy
Prvi (zdaj že zastarelo oblikovani) indijski ZF portal, ki med drugim ponuja zgodbe, avdio posnetke, ZF čestitke in žaljivke (?), forum, povezave itd.

Revolution Science Fiction
Skupnost s spletno revijo, recenzijami, zgodbami in vsem ostalim, posvečena "najboljši ZFF".

Top Science Fiction Books & Films

Update: 2 February 2011

FEBRUARYJANUARYHAPPY 2012!

Archive for 2011, 2010, 2009

FEBRUARY

Firstly, a slight deviation from our usual content; it is important:

Protest against ACTA on 4 February: because we like to read and not live dystopia!
(ACTA, what it brings, in words and in video, the official resolution (SI), the official Slovenian position (SI), the initiative for a public discussion (SI), the signatory for Slovenia apologises for the deed, the necessary getup for the protest)

Unfortunately, that is not all: again, senseless forced austerity – the petition against the termination of the independent ministry for culture phrases it correctly, culture supports the society through hard times! Rampant bureaucratism and unjust favouritism aside – merging it with three other, very different ministries will mean less resouces even for the most essential projects and cannot have positive long-term consequences.

And now for some optimistic news: meet the 11-year-old Tara Keber, the space art contest winner whose name will now also belong to one of the European satellites!

Useful and humorous writing tips (Orwell, Atwood, Gaiman).

2012 will show whether the Python lads still have what it takes. A science fiction farce is in the works!

JANUARY

One is not supposed to say a wish out loud, or it will not come true, right? However, 2012 is here, so we can divulge The Guide's wishes for Slovenian SF in the new year. Do you agree with them?

  1. More courage from the big publishers in publishing (quality!) original and translated SF.
  2. Removing speculative fiction from the literary ghetto (recognizing quality SF as equal to the widely acknowledged, yet disfunctionally lax category of the contemporary novel).
  3. More clearly defined and more objective authorial, publishing and reviewing structures with a higher degree of expertise.
  4. Revival and rejuvenation of Slovenian SF theory.
  5. Consistent respect for copyright, less plagiarism.
  6. Less nepotism, self-referentiality and fence building in the community, a broader and more diverse vision (web forums, fanzines, festivals, discussions).
  7. More (any) specialised, competent illustrators with an authentic authorial expression (a break with trashy illustration and generic technophilic 3D graphics).
  8. Linguistically and stylistically firmer works; more self-criticism.
  9. More courage for publishing in one's mother tongue, with a subsequent translation if necessary (the wording will be better).
  10. More experiments with form, literary avant-garde, prose-poetry-visual hybrids; less rigidity.
  11. More SF themed performative arts.
  12. More original ideas for narratives.
  13. More female SF (more female authors and heroines, overcoming stereotypes!).
  14. More ecotopia.
  15. More multiculturalism, moving beyond nacionalisms.
  16. A generally more progressive and subversive disposition (inherent to the genre!), discussing other relevant problems of our postmodern information society.
  17. Less pale replicas of The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.
  18. Less new age and metaphysical topics.
  19. Less superficial copies from the Anglo-American milieu (more regionally themed SF; a discussion of local topics).
  20. Less vampires, zombies, trolls, werewolves, elves, spirits.
  21. Less cheap, sensationalistic dystopia, following Holywood's trends (intended to instill paranoia).
  22. More joy of reading (free time needs to be pulled out of the clutches of the 21st century with bare hands!).

This off our chest, let us return to regular news: (it looks like we may get our 11. wish!)

Some of you are more purist than others in regard to genre conventions – especially when it comes to contemporary art projects which tend to break the traditional form-content relationship. LUMEN: Drawing in augmented reality by Dominik Mahnič and Matic Potočnik, a virtual space reconstruction, is most likely not for technosceptics and those devoted to a clear and firm SF narrative, however, the description promises: "The cultural environment which determines the ideas linked to the construction of the hologram, virtual and drowning worlds is a realistic echo of the cyberpunk stories and science fiction films". The exhibition can be seen at Galerija Alkatraz in Metelkova mesto until 3 February.

We watched the opening event of the European Capital of Culture Maribor 2012, but were not overly enthusiastic about the characheristically Slovenian artificial theatricality and the show's unrepresentative concept. However, the programme will most likely feature some intresting content throughout this year – for example, we will probably see another staging of the "space comedy based on a galaxy of sound bites and black holes" Lost in Space, organised by the Crossing festival. We will report on the when and where.

Another early announcement: an attempt at a SF themed concert combo – SCI-FI NIGHT! MoRkObOt (ITA), Entheogen (SLO), 14 March at 22:00.

The second part of Bojan Ekselenski's fantasy trilogy Vitezi in čarovniki, Indigo novi svet was published.

Neža Maurer, who recently turned 81, gave another great interview to mark the occassion. She still finds joy in our beloved literary genre:

"I love science fiction, immensely. Even in old Yugoslavia we used to subscribe to Serbian translations of great science fiction literature. I am most fond of the Polish author who wrote The Invincible [note: i.e. Niezwyciężony by Stanisław Lem from 1964], which is, to me, miraculous science fiction," spoke the sweet silverhaired poetess with a slightly unusual passion. Of Slovenian authors, she adores Miha Remec, and was also very delighted by our present, Dmitry Glukhovsky's Metro 2034, published by Sanje. "Science fiction offers two options: either they describe the future – it will not necessarily turn out that way, but it will surely differ from our present – this attracts me very much, or they exaggerate the good and the bad so greatly, you have to understand, even if you are an utter fool."

HAPPY 2012!

It is again time for an overview of this year's best SFF.

Animateka: a SFF selection

Every animation bears something inherently fantastic, but some are intentionally constructed within genre content and technical conventions.

This year's festival featured some interesting work of both types, in the competitive category there were Metachaos with hopelessly intertwined realities; Stuck in a Groove about being hypothetically caught in one single moment; the absurd The Holy Chicken of Life and Music; the dark fairytale Once There Was a King; Mahahula The Giant Rodent of Happiness from an alien coconut; the lovely Bottle; the somewhat bluish Graffitiger; Plato about travelling through dimensions; Cos w tym gatunku is more S than SF, but an important warning; Growing would be a dystopia, if it was not so realistic; Wake Up features a postapocalyptic mosquito.

The retrospective and focus categories include the dystopian classic One Hundred Years; an (un)exploded Une bombe par hazard and its consequences; the first-person Le ravissement de Frank N. Stein with growing tension; the typografically insane De Karakters; the literally and metaphorically contrasting J; the claustrophobic Die kleinere Raum; the humorously technophobic Plugs; the sticky fungus destroying Planet Z; El Hotel Eléctrico, very futuristic for the year 1908 (and 2011); Guernica come to life in Minotauromaquia, Pablo en el Laberinto; sheep turning into Niebla and Soviet architecture flying into the sky in Synchronisation.
